My story

Hello! I’m Charlotte, I’m 34 and live in my little Hertfordshire new build with my husband Ben and our little noisy Border Terrier Rags.

Let’s face it, when I say ‘new build’ the mind instantly goes to artificial grass, porcelain tiles and a severe lack of planting. Right?

But when Ben and I bought our little new build terrace back in 2020, we set ourselves the challenge of shaking off that new build stereotype and creating a space full of colour and character.

When we moved in our little box garden was just a mud pit, but over the last 3 years we have transformed it into the cottage garden of our dreams. Doing everything ourselves, saving us thousands and falling in love with gardening in the process.

The garden has become our sanctuary, a colourful, characterful cottage garden in the heart of a busy housing estate.

As more and more homes are being built, these blank canvas gardens are getting more common. So, I’m on a mission to to inspire others to transform their spaces and create havens for wildlife. And rid new builds of the stereotype. After all, even the most established gardens in the world were once a blank canvas.

I’m no garden expert, nor do I claim to be. But I’m passionate about sharing what I’ve learnt with others keen to get into gardening.

A haven for wildlife

As a new build owner, I feel it’s my responsibility to encourage the wildlife back into my garden, which were of course once green spaces. So we’ve worked hard to create a garden that works for us, but also the wildlife too.

We have filled the garden with pollinator friendly planting, a wildlife pond and even a homemade bird table - doing what we can to bring the birds, bees, butterflies and creatures back into the garden.
