The best peat-free composts!

Okay, so I’ve tried a few different #peatfree composts lately so I thought I’d share my faves with you.

These aren’t in any specific order as they’re all great! And I’m sure there’s others I haven’t tried, but these are what have worked well for me in the past. And I’ll definitely use again.

I also edited this into a reel, so if you don’t fancy reading - give it a watch instead.

1. The Dalesfoot compost wool compost. You may remember I was kindly #gifted this after meeting the fab team at the @gima_org #gardenpressevent - I sowed all my cosmos with the seed sowing compost & potted up my dahlias with the potting mix & everything’s doing really well. I’ve found it retains moisture nicely, even though it may look dry on the top it’s still nice and moist beneath the surface. They also do a clay buster which I’ve used as a mulch on my beds to help sort out my new build clay soil.

2. I had heard loads of fab things about Plantgrow so I ordered a ton bag last autumn to fill all my pots for my big bulb planting fiasco (they do smaller bags too don’t worry). And I must say, everyone was right! It’s so good. It’s got a lovely, finer texture than a lot of peat-free compost (which I tend to find can often be more like a mulch) but this is lovely and sieves easily to use for seeds too! This bag also lasted forever! So it was super reasonable & the delivery was quick and they popped it in place for me on the driveway.

3. Now @westland.horticulture do heaps of different peat-free composts which I’ve used and love but my favourite latelty is the ‘John Innes seed sowing compost’, which I was kindly #gifted by the team but immediately ordered 3 more bags from Amazon (paid for by myself) as I loved it so much. It’s probably the finest of the composts I’ve used, with a sand-like consistency. I’ve sown 80% of my seeds with this as I enjoyed it so much. It also can be bought in a smaller bag too which is actually GREAT for me as it’s lightweight meaning I can buy some and walk home (I don’t drive, so buying compost can be tricky).

4. Another one I’ve used again and again is Rocketgrow - I’ve found their compost slightly thicker than others but it retains moisture very well. I used it for all my pots last year.

5. Finally @sylvagrow which is my latest compost to try after hearing lots of people raving about it. And it’s got a lovely consistency, great for seeds & I’ve used it to finish potting up the last of my dahlias.

There’s plenty of other options out there, but these 5 are composts I either always come back to using or having tried recently and would definitely buy again!
