All the dahlias I’ve chosen to grow this year

Every year I tell myself I’m going to cut back on Dahlias, as I really don’t have the room, and the slugs and snails drive my nuts. However, every year I also get distracted (and excited) by how beautiful they are and how many amazing varieties there are, I always cave and end up growing plenty more.

Plus this year as I’m going to be volunteering at my local care home to help them do their garden, I can hopefully grow a lot of the flowers there too for them to enjoy.

I’ve also decided to opt for varieties with smaller, or more compact flowers - as, as much as I’ve loved growing the ‘au lait’ varieties in the past, they don’t do so well in containers and I don’t tend to get that many flowers at once. So this season I’m going to try grow more ‘ball’, ‘singles’ and ‘waterlily’ dahlias.

So, with that… here are the Dahlia varieties I’ve pre-ordered ready for planting in Spring. I start my tubers off in pots, in the greenhouse. But if you’re planting direct into the ground maybe wait until May time to avoid any risk of frost as Dahlias are tender plants and don’t like to get too cold.

Rose Cottage Plants

I recently discovered this nursery, which is relatively local to be so I wanted to support local. Plus, I’d heard great things. So I’m looking forward to giving these a go.
